The Ghosts of the Coney Island of the West

The Coney Island of the West lies right on the Ohio River on the east side of Cincinnati, and the park has quite a history, so it’s no wonder that its story involves more than one ghost or two. About 1500 to 2000 years ago, the land along that stretch of the Ohio River was home to mound-building native Americas, mainly the Hopewell culture , and many of the mounds remain visible today. In 1867 a farmer by the name of James Parker purchased 20 acres in the area and planted a 400-tree apple orchard. As more people traveled west, they found the orchard a good place to stop for a rest and a picnic. Parker soon realized the value of his land lay more in its location than it did in apples, and he took advantage of that, first by building picnic shelters and later by adding such structures as a dining hall, dance hall and bowling alley. Former Memphis Brothel Now a Haunted Bar

At 531 South Main Street in Memphis, Tenn. on the corner of West Calhoun Avenue, stands Earnestine & Hazel’s. Even though some would call it a dive, the bar is known for good music and an even better burger. In fact, the Soul Burger is often voted the best burger in Memphis. But while the façade is run down, and the interior is eclectic, it’s what is rarely seen that brings many to this century-old establishment. In the 1930s, sisters Earnestine and Hazel had a sundry store on the bottom floor which sold inexpensive non-perishable goods to the neighborhood residents, while the upstairs was a hotel and boarding house. Since the sisters would rent the rooms by the hour and not ask questions, the hotel soon became popular with ladies of the evening. With the building’s proximity to the railroad tracks and thousands of World War II era soldiers passing through on a daily basis, it wasn’t long before a booming brothel was in operation.
