Virtual Volunteer Opportunities

I've always like to volunteer and help others, but my health and the state of the world today make it difficult to do that on-site or in a group.  Thankfully, my daughter-in-law turned me on to virtual volunteering online.

Virtual volunteering is an excellent way for me to help others without ever leaving my home.  Many of these opportunities can also be done at whatever hours are most convenient for you.  It's a win-win situation for all!

Here are a few places you might like to lend a hand.

Zooniverse -- Zooniverse gives people of all ages and backgrounds the chance to participate in real research with over 50 active online citizen science projects. Work with 1.6 million registered users around the world to contribute to research projects led by hundreds of researchers.

Soldiers' Angels -- Since 2003, Soldiers’ Angels has provided virtual volunteer opportunities that allow people from around the world to give back to America’s troops and veterans.  Soldiers’ Angels has volunteers in all 50 states, Guam, Puerto Rico, and 24 countries abroad.  When you participate in any one of their virtual volunteer opportunities, you join a worldwide online community of volunteers who are passionate about supporting America’s military service members, wounded heroes, military families, and veterans of all eras.

Smithsonian -- Digital technology makes it possible for people who believe in the Smithsonian mission to make significant contributions online. "Digital Volunteers" can now take on important assignments to expand access to the Smithsonian's massive collections, and can participate in a variety of research programs. Some roles require special knowledge or skill, but many do not.

Distributed Proofreaders -- Distributed Proofreaders provides a web-based method to ease the conversion of Public Domain books into e-books. By dividing the workload into individual pages, many volunteers can work on a book at the same time, which significantly speeds up the creation process.  Once all the steps are completed, a post-processor carefully assembles them into an e-book, and submits it to the Project Gutenberg archive.

Crisis Text Line -- Crisis Text Line is the free, 24/7 text line for people in crisis in the United States. The service is powered by volunteer Crisis Counselors who work remotely—anywhere with a computer and secure internet connection works.  Crisis Counselors answer texts from people in crisis, bringing them from a hot moment to a cool calm through active listening, collaborative problem solving, and safety planning.
